If you've taken this workshop before; consider coming back: Robert will be working with each participant individually to develop a stronger conceptual connection between the palimpsest materials, the artist's style and preferred subject matter. Participants, especially those who have taken this workshop before, are encouraged to be in touch with Robert to talk about materials they might choose to use in the process; materials which resonate best with the subject matter or style of their work--or intentionally conflict with their subject matter and style.

Two-Day PALIMPSEST WORKSHOP
Palimpsest: Something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form.
Saturday, May 14th and Sunday, May 15th, 2016

The two-day workshop covers:
The Palimpsest concept-bringing disparate subjects and materials into a contextual relationship
Composing disparate imagery/designs and establishing a visual hierarchy.
Demonstration of a wet collage process to adhere various sources to panels
Effectively using open painting processes, translucent and linear elements, and the value relationship of colors
PowerPoint Presentation/Lecture: The Palimpsest Concept and its rich possibilities, a brief history of art involving palimpsest that includes diverse examples of works by contemporary artists, and an overview of the guest artist's work.
Hands-On: Assessing and grappling with diverse resources, making choices, developing/discovering a direction, and composing.
Demonstration: 1) Compositional strategies when working with diverse images/resources 2) Collaging wet materials to panels
PowerPoint Presentation/Lecture: Color and the importance of value relationships
Hands-On: Painting around, over, and into collaged background; arriving at a resolution
Participant Supply list:
Diverse collection of thin, flat materials to collage into a work of art: Examples include posters, old art prints, old photos (or copies of photos, if treasured heirlooms) sheet music, technical drawings or illustrations, book pages, maps, fabrics, wrapping paper, consumer product packages (e.g. cereal boxes), etc. Take a trip to Half Price Books, go to some garage sales, or hit secondhand stores!
A set of several compositions (images) to paint on top of the items above, once collaged onto your ampersand panels (see Examples for ideas)
Sketchbook and pencils for brainstorming, sketching
Acrylic paints and variety of brush sizes and shapes
16 oz. container of gloss or matte acrylic medium

about Robert Green;
Robert Green has been employing palimpsest in his work since 1987, when he first created a series of drawings on top of discarded electrical drawings. Subsequent works have utilized collaged sheet music, maps, sandpaper, and torn pieces of discarded paintings.
His recent work brings together map imagery from the broad history of cartography. These richly layered and colorful paintings transmute the language of maps into mystical landscapes, narrative evocations of historic journeys, musical passages, and poetic expeditions into space-time.
He has presented his work across the US in 60 invitational solo or group exhibitions, has been awarded 12 artist's grants, and has work in the collections of Capital One and Hilton Worldwide. His work was featured in New American Painting in 2009 and was included in Mapping: Memory and Motion in Contemporary Art at the Katonah Museum of Art in Katonah, NY, an exhibition curated by Sarah Tanguy. He was a finalist for the 2011 Hunting Art Prize and had a month-long studio residency in Albuquerque, NM in 2014.
Robert is the Director of the Fine Arts Program and Professor of Art for Abilene Christian University, teaching courses in painting, art history, and professional practices.
He earned an MFA in painting at the University of Nebraska. Besides painting and drawing, he has produced work in the disciplines of printmaking, photography, ceramics, and sculpture. And he has traveled frequently and extensively in Europe, permitting him to revisit the world's premiere art collections numerous times.
